From a morphological point of view, the new species appears to be similar to<hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique"> Heracleum rawianum </hi>C.C.Towns.<hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">,</hi> from which it differs in several morphological features including plant height, leaves and leaflets size and shape, rays number and length, number, size, indumentum of bracts and bracteoles, flowers number, indumentum of fruit, cross sections of mericarp, dorsal and commissural vittae number etc. A comprehensive description of the newly described species is provided, including detailed photographs, geographical distribution map, habitat and ecology, vernacular name and IUCN conservation status.</p><p style="txt_Motclef">KEYWORDS: Turkey, Hakkari, Heracleum, endemic, new species.</p><p style="txt_Resume_italique" xml:lang="fr">RÉSUMÉ. The genus <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="1"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> L. contains approximately 120-130 species (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor015"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Ostroumova 2019)</hi></ref>. The Caucasus and Sino-Himalayan regions are the main centers of diversity for <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="2"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor016"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Pimenov &amp; Leonov 1993</hi></ref>; <ref target="#_idTextAnchor018"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Pu &amp; Watson 2005</hi></ref>; <ref target="#_idTextAnchor011"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Logacheva et al. 2008)</hi></ref>. The Caucasus (with 30 species), the Sino-Himalayan region (with 25 species), and Iran (with 11 species) are the main areas of its diversification and speciation (Pimenov &amp; Leonov, 2004). With the recently published species of <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="3"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="kurdistanicum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">kurdistanicum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">Rastegar, Maroofi &amp; Tabad</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></tei:term>, the number of <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="4"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> species in Iran is now 12 (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor019"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Tabad et al. 2021)</hi></ref>. <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="5"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> is not monophyletic according to the results of phylogenetic studies (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor010"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Liu &amp; Downie 2019</hi></ref>). The main differences between <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="6"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> and <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="7"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Tetrataenium" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Tetrataenium</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> are as follows: the former genus has a white corolla (vs yellowish or yellow in the latter), outer flowers of the umbel with outer petals enlarged (vs symmetric flowers), secretory ducts in the pericarp solitary (vs paired) (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor033">Kljuykov <hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">et. al.</hi> 2021</ref>). <ref target="#_idTextAnchor009"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Hosseinzadeh et al. (2019)</hi></ref> reported that the taxon <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="8"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="lasiopetalum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">lasiopetalum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">Boiss.</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> shown as one of the <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="9"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> taxa found in Turkey is actually the synonym of <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="10"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Tetrataenium" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Tetrataenium</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="lasiopetalum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">lasiopetalum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">(Boiss.) Manden. It</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> is represented in Turkey by 22 taxa (17 species), ten of which are endemic (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor003"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Davis 1972</hi></ref>; <ref target="#_idTextAnchor020"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Tkachenko 1993</hi></ref>; <ref target="#_idTextAnchor005"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Duran 2012)</hi></ref>. <ref target="#_idTextAnchor008"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Güzel &amp; Kayıkçı (2017)</hi></ref> rediscovered <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="11"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="amanum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">amanum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">Boiss. ex Kotschy &amp; Boiss.</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> after 150 years and the number of species in Turkey increased from 18 to 23 taxa and 11 species are endemic.</p><p style="txt_Normal">During field exploration carried out in 2001-2023 in Bala plateau of Cilo mountain region (eastern Turkiye), an unusual population of <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="12"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> was discovered. At first glance, it seemed to be similar to <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="13"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="rawianum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">rawianum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">C.C. Towns.</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> but important differences (e.g. plant habit, plant height, including rays length, shape of bracts and bracteoles, length of fruit, etc.) allowed easy separation. A detailed examination of the collected specimens revealed a combination of morphological characters not found in any otherknown species in the genus, and therefore it is described below as <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="14"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="kurdicum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">kurdicum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">Fırat</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> ‌<jats:named-content content-type="nomenclaturalStatus" rank="species">sp. nov.</jats:named-content></tei:term>, </p></tei:div><tei:div type="section1"><head subtype="level1" style="T_1">MATERIAL AND METHODS</head><p style="txt_Normal">The specimens from Bala plateau, Hakkari province Turkey, gathered in 2004, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2023, were cross-checked with the identification keys provided by <ref target="#_idTextAnchor012"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Mandenova (1951)</hi></ref> in the flora of URSS, <ref target="#_idTextAnchor003"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Davis (1972)</hi></ref> in the flora of Turkey, <ref target="#_idTextAnchor013"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Mandenova (1987)</hi></ref> and <ref target="#_idTextAnchor014"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Mozaffarian (2007)</hi></ref> in the Flora Iranica and <ref target="#_idTextAnchor022"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Townsend (2013)</hi></ref> in the Flora of Iraq. And additionally the following necessary source of supply has been checked (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor000"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Boissier 1872</hi></ref>; <ref target="#_idTextAnchor031"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Davis <hi rend="italic" style="typo_Italique">et. al.</hi> 1988</hi></ref>; <ref target="#_idTextAnchor004"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Duman 2000)</hi></ref>. Herbarium specimens from Van Flora Application and Research Center and Van Yüzüncü Yil University Faculty of Education (VANF and VHLV, acronyms according to <ref target="#_idTextAnchor021"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Thiers 2023</hi></ref>) were also examined and compared.</p><p style="txt_Normal">Images of the living material were taken with a Sony DSCR1 digital camera. Geographical coordinates were identified using a Magellan eXplorist 710 GPS. According to the grid system (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor002"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Davis 1965)</hi></ref> this new species grows in the C9 square (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor024"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Fig. 1</hi></ref>). A total of 10 herbarium specimens of the new species were collected from three adjacent localities and deposited in the herbaria VANF, VHLF and in the personal herbarium of the author (Herb. M. Fırat). The conservation status of the new species was assessed according to the IUCN criteria (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor032">IUCN 2017</ref>).</p><p style="txt_Normal">Fruit cross sections were taken manually. Due to its composition, Sartur reagent stains woody and corky tissues, oil and starch accumulated areas well and can accomplish this task with a single staining without the need for double or triple staining (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor030">Çelebioğlu &amp; Baytop, 1949</ref>). Stem 60-100 cm tall, erect, branched from middle and upper part, striate or grooved, slender, 2-7 mm in diameter at base, pubescent below, becoming sparsely pubescent to glabrous above. Different sized parenchymal cells made up the mesocarp. Three to four rows of sclerenchymatous cells made up the endocarp. Different sized parenchymal cells made up the margins. The wings stretched perpendicular to the fruit&amp;apos;s axis and were made up of eight to ten rows of sclerenchymatous cells. Each mericarp had four dorsal vittae, which were made up of a single row of parenchymal cells. The same as dorsal vittae, 2 or 1 commissural vittae in fruit. There were three vascular bundles that connected the dorsal vittae. The fruit axis was parallel to the extension of the sclerenchymatous cells. The raphes are consisted of sclerenchymatous cells (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor026"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Fig. 8</hi></ref>).</p></tei:div></tei:div></body></floatingText></tei:div><tei:div type="section1"><head subtype="level1" style="T_1">DISCUSSION</head></tei:div><tei:div type="section1"><head subtype="level1" style="T_1">Taxonomic relationships</head><p style="txt_Normal"><tei:term type="taxonomy" n="30"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="kurdicum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">kurdicum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">Fırat</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> ‌<jats:named-content content-type="nomenclaturalStatus" rank="species">sp. nov.</jats:named-content></tei:term>, is morphologically different from all other <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="31"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> species. Its closest relative appears to be <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="32"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="rawianum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">rawianum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term>, from which the new species differs by many remarkable morphological differences (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor023"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Table 1</hi></ref>). <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="33"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="kurdicum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">kurdicum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">Fırat</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> ‌<jats:named-content content-type="nomenclaturalStatus" rank="species">sp. nov.</jats:named-content></tei:term>, is an endemic from Bala plateau (Hakkari/east Anatolia), high mountains of Iranian-Turanian geographic element, where it occurs in dry and slightly moist meadows at 2700-2800 m elevation. <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="34"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">H.</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="rawianum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">rawianum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> is a higher mountain plant that grows at 3200-3300 m. In addition to being a higher mountain plant, it also likes stony rocky areas (<ref target="#_idTextAnchor027"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Fig. 9</hi></ref>B<ref target="#_idTextAnchor024"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">1</hi></ref>), so the habitats of <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="35"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">H.</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="rawianum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">rawianum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> and the new species do not match at all. In contrast to the pubescent fruit of <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="36"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="kurdicum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">kurdicum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">Fırat</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> ‌<jats:named-content content-type="nomenclaturalStatus" rank="species">sp. nov.</jats:named-content></tei:term>, <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="37"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">H.</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="rawianum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">rawianum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> is glabrous. Although the number of vittae is equivalent, the dorsal vittae in <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="38"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">H.</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="rawianum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">rawianum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> are more elongated than the inner two.</p><p style="txt_Normal">Since <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="39"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="kurdicum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">kurdicum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">Fırat</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> ‌<jats:named-content content-type="nomenclaturalStatus" rank="species">sp. nov.</jats:named-content></tei:term>, is directly distinguished from <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="40"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="pastinacifolium" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">pastinacifolium</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> because of commissural vittae, there is no need for discussion. When the description of <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="41"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">H.</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="pastinacifolium" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">pastinacifolium</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> is analysed in virtual herbariums and written floras, commissural vittae are absent in all of them. <ref target="#_idTextAnchor001"><hi rend="underline" style="typo_souligne">Çil (2010)</hi></ref> studied the fruit anatomy of many <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="42"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> species growing in Turkey in his master thesis. In this study, all three subspecies of <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="43"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="pastinacifolium" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">pastinacifolium</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> (subsp. <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="44"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="pastinacifolium" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">pastinacifolium</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic>, subsp. <jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="transcaucasicum" taxon-name-part-type="infraspecificEpithet">transcaucasicum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">(Manden.) According to the key of the genus in the flora of Turkey, it is directly separated from <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="50"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="argaeum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">argaeum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> due to the absence of commissural vittae. <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="51"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="kurdicum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">kurdicum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="scientificNameAuthorship">Fırat</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> ‌<jats:named-content content-type="nomenclaturalStatus" rank="species">sp. nov.</jats:named-content></tei:term>, is different from <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="52"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="argaeum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">argaeum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term>; by plant hight 60-100 cm (30-55 cm), lower leaves oblong to elliptic (vs ternate to pinnate); leaflets petiolulate or sessile, terminal segments ovate to orbicular, 3-9 × 2-8 cm (vs suborbicular to reniform, sessile, 3.5-6.5×2-5 cm); rays number and length 7-14, 5-16 cm (vs 7-11, unequal, 1.5-7 cm); bracteoles 7-9, linear to subulate (vs 0-2, ovate to lanceolate); petals strongly radiant, radiant deeply bilobed (vs somewhat radiant, shallowly 2-lobed); fruit 9-12 × 6-9 mm, elliptic to obovate (vs 7-8× 5 mm, obovate to broadly elliptic); dorsal vittae 4 (vs 3-4); commissural vittae 1-2 (vs absent). Apart from these morphological differences, the geographical distribution between the two species is disconnected. Also in my personal opinion <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="53"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="argaeum" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">argaeum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> is a variation of <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="54"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part> ‌<tp:taxon-name-part reg="pastinacifolium" taxon-name-part-type="specificEpithet">pastinacifolium</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term>.</p><p style="txt_Normal">The genus <tei:term type="taxonomy" n="55"><tp:taxon-name><jats:italic><tp:taxon-name-part reg="Heracleum" taxon-name-part-type="genus">Heracleum</tp:taxon-name-part></jats:italic></tp:taxon-name></tei:term> is known in Turkey with 18 species and 23 taxa (11 endemics).
